x + y = -8. sum of the numbers is -8

x - y = 2. difference(-) of the numbers is 2

now we add the two equations

x + x + y - y= -8 + 2

2x = -6

x = -6/2. = -3

substitute value of x in second equation to get y

-3 - y = 2

-y = 2 + 3

-y = 5

y = -5
