How is adding and subtracting decimals different from adding and subtracting whole numbers?

it isn't different, it is very much the same
1-1 = 0
.1-.1 = 0
5.25 - 3.75 = 1.50
1.0005 +1.005 = 2.0055
just make sure to line the decimal places on top of each other

There really isn't any difference about it other than the fact that there is a decimal point next to the number.

You could literally add the a decimal point to a whole number to make it a decimal

2=2.0
