Redeemers were the southern wing of the Bourbon Democrats, the conservative, pro-business faction in the Democratic Party, who pursued a policy of Redemption, seeking to oust the Radical Republicans a coalition of freedom, "carpetbaggers", and "scalawags" (poorer non-slaving whites).
