4.7 + m = 1.8
4.7 - 4.7 + m = 1.8 - 4.7
m = 1.8 - 4.7 
m = -2.9

To solve this problem, isolate the variable.
This is done by removing all other terms from the side the variable is on. This can be done by inverting the operations done.
In this case, that means subtracting 4.7 from both sides of the equation.
4.7 + m - 4.7 = m
1.8 - 4.7 = -2.9
m = -2.9
