How did the war challenge the colonies economically?

Although the colonies were surprisingly wealthy in 1774, the War was costly. Unable to pay currency to attract soldiers, the new United States used land grants to pay soldiers. As the war dragged on, with combat ending only in 1781, enough land was needed that reserve districts were created.
