An "age of change".  There were racial inequalities, especially for a black man, great changes were taking place.

F. Scott Fitzgerald was a mild mannered man, with an impeccable work ethic, and a passion for music.

People looked past the color of his skin when listening to his brand of music.  Through perserverence, he became a sought after member of the music world.
