Peisistratus was known in Athenian history as a despot, or a tyrant or ruler with absolute powers. He had archer body guards with him at all times and he has taken away citizens rights to protect themselves. However, he was an effective leader who preserved the constitutional forms of government in Athens and he contributed greatly in its more efficient operation.
