Answer

When waves move towards shallow water they slow down in speed, lose their energy and have a reduced wave height.

Explanation

The sea bed affects the waves when moving in shallow areas by disturbing the orbital movement making water particles to fail to return to the initial position. The shallow the depth, the swell becomes steeper and higher. When the depth of water is less than half of the wavelength, the area is taken to be shallow.
