In the beginning of the "middle ages" trade induced a spark of revelation, allowing way for small shops which then increased popularity among the towns people allowing for growth and the continued expansion of trade routes. So at one point the trade was moderately Local but when you say late, I'm sure you mean towards the end, in which case it was Far-reaching indeed.
