Since there are 3 gal of paint to paint 16 wooden signs, you need to divide:

1 wooden sign = 16 ÷ 3 ⇒ [tex] 5\frac{1}{3} [/tex]

Each sign used [tex] 5\frac{1}{3} [/tex] gal of paint
