The midnight judges were judges appointed by President John Adams, right before he was succeeded (took over) by President Thomas Jefferson. He did this to preserve Federalist influence for Jefferson's presidency.

Explanation:

One of the judges names was William Marbury, who was named Justice of the Peace for the District of Columbia.

There was a total of 16 Federalist circuit judges and 42 Federalist justices.
