The slope of a straight line is calculated by the formula

[tex]\begin{gathered} \text{slope}=\frac{3-(-1)}{-3-5} \\ =\frac{3+1}{-8} \\ =\frac{4}{-8} \\ =-\frac{1}{2} \end{gathered}[/tex]
