im assuming you're talking about the short story The Bet by Anton Chekhov. so in the bet the banker was certain the young man would not be able to last long. in getting caught up in the argument the banker made a bet with the young man saying he couldn't last 5 years for two million. he was certain the young man wouldn't last long and would prove his point that much more.
