The danger of reduced traction is greatest when the road surface offers less traction. Traction is caused by the friction between the tires and the road surface. The greatest dangers are from reducing this friction to the lowest levels such as with snow or ice on the road surface. Reduced traction can also be caused by water, a thin covering of mud, and even loose material such as sand.
