Why did lincoln's election as president convince southerners that they lost their voice in the national government?

In the 1850's Northern sympathies with the South eroded over the issue of slavery. The Democratic Party split into Northern and Southern factions, permitting Lincoln's Republican party to gain control of Congress and the White House in 1860. The South realized they no longer had allies in control of the Federal Government.
