Is it acceptable for an individual to ignore the possibility of truncation errors and their consequences when developing his or her own application?

no, i believe it's not acceptable
Truncation error usually happens when you truncating infinite sum and approximating it by finite sum.
An error in this calculation will possibly caused the application to crash when doing its numerical analysis.
