First make them into like denominators. 8/12+6/12=14/12=1 1/6

You need to make the denominators the same.
Find the LCM.
It is 12.
Make them have the same denominator:
8/12 + 6/12.
Solve:
6 + 8 = 14
14/12 or 1 2/12
