Thomas Jefferson. Approximately 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River. At a cost in the currency of the day of around 3¢ per acre. Including interest, the U.S. finally paid France $23,213,568 (~$497.5 million in 2016) for the territory. France transferred authority over the region to the United States in December 1803.
