How has the suburban environment changed shopping?

I would say that in North America or at least Canada and the US suburban areas mainly have big box stores like COSTCO, WALMART etc and the small personalized shops are more common in the city core and people's orders are liable to be bigger in the suburban areas as travel distances to shops can be greater.
